Pupil Leadership Team

The Pupil Leadership Team is an important part of life at Sunny Bank Primary School and provides pupils with opportunities to develop leadership skills while making a meaningful contribution to the school community. Through these roles, pupils represent the views of others, take responsibility, solve problems and contribute positively to school life.

 

Leadership roles help pupils build confidence, independence and communication skills while developing teamwork, decision-making and emotional intelligence. By working with a range of peers, children strengthen relationships and promote equality, diversity and inclusion across the school.

 

The Department for Education (DfE) requires schools to promote British Values through everyday practice. The Pupil Leadership Team supports this through Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs.

 

Mrs McGahan is the Pupil Leadership Strategic Lead and has oversight of all pupil leadership groups. Staff lead each area to ensure pupils meet regularly, their voices are heard and they play an active role in shaping school life and contributing to the wider community. Mrs McGahan has carefully thought out the skills and key attributes that are required for each role and, working alongside staff, continuous review allows pupil leadership to grow from strength to strength. 

 

Allocation of Pupil Leadership Roles

Pupils can apply for a range of leadership opportunities including:

• Reading Leaders
• Climate Champions
• Mental Health Champions
• Tech Champions
• Science Ambassadors
• School Parliament
• Head Pupils
• Prefects
• Play Leaders

Towards the end of the summer term, pupils are invited to apply for leadership positions for the following academic year. Selection methods vary depending on the role and may include applications, staff selection, pupil voting or interviews.

Roles are allocated before the new academic year to allow successful pupils to receive training and complete a handover with current post holders. Successful applicants are celebrated in a whole-school assembly and displayed on the Pupil Leadership board.

 

Preparing for the Wider World

Year 6 leadership roles encourage pupils to become positive role models and prepare them for their transition to secondary school and beyond. Pupil leaders demonstrate responsibility, resilience and maturity while developing confidence, communication and problem-solving skills. They lead by example, support younger pupils and show respect, empathy and inclusion across the school community. Leadership roles recognise pupils who show commitment, initiative and readiness to make a positive impact both in school and in the wider world.

 

Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Sunny Bank Primary School, we are committed to developing environmentally responsible citizens through our Climate Champions leadership role. Climate Champions help care for and improve the school grounds through gardening and environmental projects. They support Mrs B during Forest School sessions and encourage younger pupils to value and respect the natural environment.

They also raise awareness of climate issues across the school and lead by example by promoting sustainable choices and helping to keep the school environment clean through initiatives such as litter picking. Through this role, pupils develop responsibility, teamwork and a commitment to creating a more sustainable future.
