Maths is a key life skill. It is a proficiency which involves confidence and competency with number and measures. It requires an understanding of the number system, computational skills and an ability to apply this knowledge and understanding to solve number problems in a variety of contexts and scenarios. Maths also demands an understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and then presented in a plethora of diagrams, charts and tables. It also involves being able to interpret and analyse the information presented.

At Sunny Bank Primary School maths is taught daily in two separate sessions. Children are taught an hourly maths session following long term and medium term planning from the Abacus Evolve maths scheme. This ensures children experience the different aspects of maths - number and shape, space and measures on a regular basis. Emphasis within the scheme is also placed on children using and applying the skills that they have been taught. Within each class children will receive teaching inputs from their teacher across the week and from this they will complete independent tasks to practise, refine or expand the skills/ concepts that they have been taught.

Children also need to develop the speed and proficiency with which they can complete the four different operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. To this end a daily session is also undertaken at Sunny Bank to develop these 'key skills.' These often take the form of quick fire question sessions using iPads and other interactive technology.
